Peter de Jager Y2K pundit…
Peter de Jager Y2K pundit… as well as the others… where is they now? what happened to the disaster? In a time where the world scoffs at the so-called Y2K hoax, some people did report some legitimate glitches. Got some opinions? Please tell me…
Here’s what I wrote in early Sep 00:
Okay, let’s get this right for the last time, for the record: Computer people worked tirelessly against any possible y2k fallout. They coded 24 hours a day, they upgraded systems for months. The worked furiously, in a professional and dedicated manner. This is why there was no y2k armegeddeon. We saved your sorry business asses and the thanks we got was laughter and ridicule over the lack of y2k disaster. Management created the y2k problem, management ignored it for 25 years +, and technology people paid the price. Software did not crash, systems did not fail, and the economy is intact because of computer and technology people. Software vendors with y2k patches, programmers spending hundreds and thousands of hours on remediation, systems administators updating and upgrading millions of PC’s and servers… so damn you managers and lawyers all to hell… as for you, Joe Consumer, don’t forget that….
Oh well… again, happy New Year. I’ll turn the webcam on at 2:00 EST leave it up for a while.

Wired Magazine: A Strange Brew
Wired Magazine: A Strange Brew of Politics, Web Far from being the year that technology revolutionized the presidential race, most Americans unapologetically turned to traditional media for their news. Dot-com firms that planned aggressive coverage of the conventions instead scaled back their efforts, and Voter.com found itself laying off dozens of employees. Good thing I decided to retire “Dean’s Voting Guide.” Or, I would have had to lay myself off. Whew!

Chris Rock sues Idealab.com for
Chris Rock sues Idealab.com for 5 million. After an endorsement deal falls through that gave Rock the rights to purchase 1.75 million shares of common stock in parent company z.com. As idealab.com’s withdrew it’s IPO and z.com prepares to lay off half of it’s employees. Rock claims they used his good name, delayed the transaction, and now he want’s his damn money! I Don’t blame him a bit… do you? Related stories: Idealab.com sues Chris Rock for non-delivery and Idealab’s z.com, a less hyped pop.com competitor, closes funding round, but lays off half Its staff. I thought that idealab.com was a really bad idea…

GeekPress: “Nobody shoots like Mike.”
GeekPress: “Nobody shoots like Mike.” After Michael McDermott (allegedly) went postal and killed 7 of his coworkers in a shooting spree in Wakefield, Massachusetts, several curious websurfers decided to take a look at the website Michaelmcdermott.com. The site belonged to a photographer who coincidentally had the same name, and it featured his business slogan “Nobody shoots like Mike”. After receiving hundreds of e-mails, he quickly changed the front page to remove the slogan.

Well, I tried it several
Well, I tried it several times. I got different results each time. I guess that goes to show you how unstable cable connections can be: (1), (2), (3). I’m really not complaining too loudly. I love my cable modem. After suffering for so many years with the pathetic offerings of the phone company… I’ll gladly pay Comcast (the other evil empire) whatever they want. At least for now…

Bay Area ‘Mad Taggers’ Target
Bay Area ‘Mad Taggers’ Target SUVs (via metafilter) Evidently, like most activists, these guys are forcing their disapproval upon others. Sticking stickers on SUV’s that are not friendly to the environment, they are causing a small stir in CA. Not sure why they are doing this, other than to attract free publicity and attention for their website. (which I won’t link to). Now, this is not a terrible criminal act, but could possibly cause one to receive an old fashioned ass kicking for their troubles.
Now, I am indeed concerned about the environment. But what is most troublesome to me about the entire SUV debacle isn’t the impact on the environment, the projection of status that they convey, or the fact that they are almost never used for their intented purpose. I am most concerned about the inexperienced drivers of these large, unstable, and dangerous vehicles. I work in the SUV capital of the world. I have to contend with these people and this problem on a daily basis (for at least 2 hours a day). I’m can say from first hand experience that, despite any flaws in Firestone tires, there were more than plenty of SUV’s and large passenger trucks lying in ditches with tires pointed skyward. As well as the other cars they took with them on the way to death. Whenever you oversteer one of these top-heavy vehicles at a high rate of speed, they will go sideways and flip over in seconds flat. That’s all there is to it. ANY tire will shred under those circumstances, very few drivers are able to contend with and correct this while driving.

The paxtonland redsign poll results
The paxtonland redsign poll results indicate that paxtonland is due for a redesign. I could have guessed that, of the 9 people who voted, I must say it’s close. But there will be no recount, no talk of Chads, or supreme court rulings. The people have spoken.
I think that the content is getting very good. We’ve generated about 3 megabytes of good commentary, links, and everthing else that you can imagine. The comments system is working out pretty well right now. There are some drawbacks about it and I view it as a temporary measure until I can get paxtonland moved to another host. It’s begining to look like I should spin paxtonland.com away from “Dean’s Homepage” and make it a seperate site.
Dean’s homepage has always been about technology, personal and family stuff, and an experimental playground for me to test whatever web gizmo I wanted to try. Paxtonland has started to develop a life of it’s own. People have poured a lot of effort and thought into the writing they’ve done here. It may be fitting to move it to a better place with more functionality and speed. I’ll ponder this thing a bit and keep you posted. At the minimum, a redesign with added functionality is in order. Stay tuned…

“Chanderalla of Harlem” by Jenna
“Chanderalla of Harlem” by Jenna Bush. Does Gee Dubbya’s daughter really go to a lowly state school? Is this further evidence of the intellectual cess (er, gene?) pool in the Bush family? Is this seriously college level work? Don’t give me any shit about picking on Gee Dubbya’s kids… Once you enter into the public light caveat emptor. Besides, this is no worse then Rush Limblah showing a picture of Chelsea Clinton and calling it “the whitehouse dog.” on his TV show. (thank metafilter for the link).

In sex news today: Kids
In sex news today: Kids Get Graphic Instruction In Homosexual Sex. Now I’m all for tolerance. I think it doesn’t do kids much good to pretend that there aren’t alternative lifestyles. I don’t really mind the construct of government run sex education. I’d even go along with sex education as long as I could review the material and sign off my approval. But, this is a bit out of “hand”, don’t you thinK? (click “discuss >>” to let me know).

Be sure and check The
Be sure and check The Annual NORAD Tracks Santa Claus Website. This has been a paxton family tradition for about four years now. Kind of neat, I think they have gotten bigger and bigger each year. They take the job of tracking St. Nick very seriously and you can get real time updates as to his whereabouts.
