Gov. Jeb Bush to seek guardian for fetus of rape victim
MIAMI, May 14 — Gov. Jeb Bush has asked a court to appoint a guardian for the fetus of a developmentally disabled rape victim, a move that has angered women’s rights groups and reignited the debate over abortion in Florida.
This is despite the fact the the Fl. supreme court ruled well over a decade ago that appointing guardians for fetus was “clearly improper.” This is the case of a 22 year old who has no family, has lived in state supervised facilities for 18 years, and is severely developmentally disabled. She cannot aid the investigation to locate her attacker.
Ugly, ugly, ugly situation. Christian groups voice support for this decision, the ACLU and womens groups are not happy at all.
What do you think? Has the Bush sibling taken advantage of this situation for political gain or, is he genuinely concerned for this woman and her baby’s well being? Should the government have any such authority over a human being? If she is incapable of making a personal decision, how can a governmental system make it for her? Would this situation be any worse if a pro-choice politico was in office and had ordered the woman to abort the fetus?
