The Justice Department has finally opened a criminal investigation of fallen energy giant Enron Corp.
Hells bells… it’s about time. Of all of the big business super scams of 2001-2001, this one is the worst by a wide margin. I’d imagine that this isn’t the only investigation going on. God knows that every democratic nincompoop with a brain jumped on the hate-Enron-Bush-big oil-power company-conspiracy bandwagon long ago. In fact I’d imagine that there isn’t many democrats that aren’t on a committee on this issue. Be that as it may, it is still true that Ashcroft has largely ignored this segment of the corporate black hand that is sweeping across the country. It’s much more exciting to make up laws about international war crimes. Seeing as how he has so much experience in this area. Anyway…
Why is Enron an Evildoer?
A. Well, could be because company executives cashed out over 1 billion is Enron stock options before the stock began to crash, then authorized a freeze in trading while employee 401k plans, heavily dependant upon Enron stock, dropped to nothing. Despite the fact that they have perpretrated some of the most spectacular financial frauds in history. That could be one good reason reason. Sins that aren’t just financial, they also have a pretty miserable human rights and environmental track record too.
B. They created one of the worst corporate environmental records in U.S. history. Will full support of both Bush administrations and the state of Texas, 17 other states and 39 countries. But, not in their opionion
C. Ken Lay and other Enron execs have long been friends of the Bush family. Recently Lay raised over 25 million dollars for the Bush campaign, including more support than can ever be discovered. For what reason? Influence, of course. They had just concluded advising the Bush administration in Oct., a week before the Enron meltdown. The incestuous relationships go back to the early 80’s. Shared Enron execs, cabinet members, Gov’t department heads, consultants… it never ends.
This should be Bush’s own private Watergate, at a much larger scale. It’s not a crackpot real estate Ponzi scheme like the Clintons, it’s much worse. The hell of it all is that because of the Attacks in September, these events have escaped most of the media’s attention. I wonder if the public knew how terrible and involved the corruption was, would they have voted him so very popular. Sad news for Bush, Joseph Liberman is the chairman of the committee established to investigate this heroic monstrosity. God help G. W., they will make Ken Starr and his torch carrying lynch mob look like a bunch of PETA protestors.
