eBay item 426080142 (Ends Sep-08-00 13:52:55 PDT) – Reliable Cray Y-MP C90 Supercomputer (found on slashdot.org) I can’t believe this is for sale on eBay… for 35,000 bucks. Side note: Cray was bought out by Sillicon Graphics, they are trying to sell it now, last I heard. I wonder if a cray runs UNIX, I think so… wow, that would be a good SETI machine.

U.I. update: bookmarklets Drag the
U.I. update: bookmarklets Drag the correct link for your browsers personal toolbar (Netscape) or the links bar (I.E 4-5.5), or just bookmark it: tell dean (for Netscape users) tell dean (for I.E 4-5.5 users).
Then, when you are at a page or website that you’d like to send here to paxtonland just hit the “tell dean” link, it will automatically fill in the code and page title for you. All you have to do is make your comments, and hit the “post and publish” button. Easy. sleasy. Covergirl… Thanks Joe MacDonald for the massaging the I.E. 4-5.5 bookmarklet, I don’t think that Pyra even has this right yet, but our Joe did.
We love ya baby!U.I. update: the “link>>” link You may have noticed that “link>>” has been appearing after each item for a while. This allows you to link to a particular post. I only started using it about 2 weeks ago, so the really old stuff won’t work, but starting a while back, you can hyperlink back to a post to point out an older comment.
Also, the archives have been fixed and a new download has been added to the “software” section of paxtonland.

Netscape on top of “Tucows
Netscape on top of “Tucows Top Picks”. According to tucows.com, Communicator is downloaded more than ICQ. ICQ is the king of all programs with a million downloads a week from c|net’s download.com.
Can you imagine why this is? How can so many people be possibly Downloading and using Netscape if the usage statistics indicate that Netscape browser market share is only 20%? I’m I seeing something in all of this that isn’t there? What about the older versions of Netscape 3+? What about Netscape 4.08 (stand alone browser) What about 16 bit versions? What about versions of Mozilla and Netscape 6? Someone please shed some light on this for me.

Making the Macintosh, Home Page@Stanford
Making the Macintosh, Home Page@Stanford (found on Ars Technica) This is where I spend the majority of my saturday morning. I know a couple of you read slashdot.org as well as arstechnica.com, but many of you don’t. An excellent historical look into one of the most important times in recent history. Can you imagine? They will be teaching this stuff to kids as they talk about the industrial revolution. In many places, technology history is already being taught.

the archives are waaay off
the archives are waaay off kilter. I’m not sure what I did wrong there, but the last five months of this blather has been whacked. Oh, I still have the files, but the scripts are supposed to automatically link them for me. What a hassle. I have to get a host and get this thing moved to PHP quick. I do own paxtonland.com and want to get started as soon as I can. Meanwhile, faithful readers, bear with growth. It’s painful at times.

I have to wear a
I have to wear a tie for my job and I have little choice about it. Yes, it sucks. Yes, I’m tired of it. Yes, I know we are the last office doing this. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes… Anyway, I fill up my car near the factory where all Chevrolet and GMC full sized trucks and vans are produced. I’m tired of getting dirty looks in the morning when I fill up for my 67 mile commute to work. These guys think I am a some sort of G.M. supervisor, or something. They stare, scowl, and curl up their lips in contemptuous snarls. It’s depressing indeed. In the evening, when I stop off for a pack of smokes, or to pick up something from the store, same story. You know, my boss used to work in Flint and had similar problems, 15 years ago.
I remember before I had to strap on this uniform, I once had an experience that should have been prophetic. I was at a bar with my father, we were both in suits. My grandmother, his mother, had died and we were having a few on the evening before the funeral. We had been with a whole party, invited and served free of charge by the owner. We lingered after everyone left, including the owner, we had a couple of more rounds as it started moving towards 11:00 pm. I got up to use the restroom and noticed every jerk in the place was eyeballing me. Some guy in the bathroom told me that we’d better get our asses out of there before something happened. Well, since this dive was about a block from the oldest Chevy factory in the country, I suppose these jerks thought we were “the man.” They did not enjoy having their “liquid lunch” break being interrupted by two jerks in suits. (ever wonder why that G.M. vechicle you just bought is a piece of shit?) We got out of there fast to say the least. Didn’t want out faces rearranged for the funeral.
I hate Flint sometimes. But, then again I hate suits and ties, gotta get out of this junk fast. Dan says we may as well be wearing tuxedos with tails and top hats and twirling white tipped canes. Yep, we may as well be…

And speaking the Who, have you listened to “Live at Leeds” in a while? “Substitute” has to be one of the best live songs I have ever heard. Why I have it blasting in my head phones right now, as luck would have it. What a coincidence.

PassportAccess.com will register your resume
PassportAccess.com will register your resume in their database without permission. They use robots to scour multiple career websites, I’m assuming that they probably have accounts with pay sites. They then make your resume available without your permission in it’s searchable database to recruiters that pay them for access to it. Low down, dirty, sneaky business… another example of how not to do business on the internet.

I’ve been running and testing
I’ve been running and testing betas of Windows ME for quite a while now. I like Windows ME very much. Because my company is a Microsoft partner, I’ve got the final retail version, I was able to download and install it from the private MSDN site. I must tell you that I think this is the quickest, most stable, and reliable version of windows to date. Boot up is fast, shut down is very fast. By the way, plug-n-play is superb. I’ve yet to see a single blue screen. I must say that I’m very impressed, Windows ME is still largely untested, but the price of upgrade is much less then previous versions. Early rumors indicate that street prices could be as little as $30.00 compared to $165.00 for Windows 2000 Professional but, that’s a rumor.
Usage and selection rules as follows (as always):
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation users, get Windows 2000. That means software developers, CAD operators, engineers, graphic artists, and workstation level computers (with more than one processor, large SCSI drives, 512MB+ RAM, etc…). If you are never going to run a game, and need the control and stability of Windows NT, this is your choice. Networking, security, excellent hard disk management (Software RAID, NTFS, etc..) and better management of multiple users are still resident features of Win2K Pro that many users don’t/won’t need.
Windows 95/98 users gamers, Office 95/97/2000 users, internet browsing machines, home networkers, business networkers (light usage) etc… Windows ME is for you. You’ll not need the multiple layers of security, you don’t have 2 processors, you do need the drivers, you do need the more advanced plug and play support, you do need the multimedia support. Please remember that you can still accomplish all of those things with Windows 2000, but it not as user friendly, wizard driven, and easy as Windows ME.

In the recent developments of
In the recent developments of the concept of micropayments the W3C are hammering out drafts and agreements. They’ve set up a working group and have drafts set of for a markup language. Meanwhile debate rages on on this topic. I would imagine that this will not even be the tip of the iceberg. They’ll be micropayment collection schema covering all spectums and combinations of delivery of content for cash. I joined paypal. I like it very much, it provides me with a way finally to ask for money for stuff here and elsewhere. Besides being good use for internet trade such as auctions as well as classified ads. I’ve bought 2 motherboards and some other used PC junk so far using paypal. Micropayments are the wave of the future, good or bad, they are here to stay. I think that paypal will be as big as pricewatch.

So, Ben and Jerrys ice
So, Ben and Jerrys ice cream aparently has terribly unresponsible levels of dioxin. Shame, I’m thinking about that as I am spooning into my gaping maw, a pint of “Half Baked, 2 Twisted! Chocolate Fudge Brownie (meets) Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.” Fuck it, I really don’t care, dioxin-schmioxin… this stuff rocks! As much as I rag on hippies and baby boomers, this is one company that I feel we can trust. At least I hope so. Anyway, I hope that it all works out, I do understand dairy products are loaded with this stuff… Anyway, it’s about time for me to stop eating this stuff. Must… stop… ha-aalf… waa-ay… muuu-st… st-tttop…

I’m working feverishly on my own arcade website right now. That includes direct downloads of ROMS. I’m sort of tired of the arcade emulation sites. They are trying to make a buck from the banner ads. They usually have a Top 50/Top 100 scam they run you through to boost thier ratings and get more pennies for clickthru’s. Screw them, how much money can they be making for their users trouble a couple of bucks a day? To me, playing the games for free and bringing back those memories is priceless. I want to teach others how to play them too, that would only increase their worth to me. I’ll have it donw in a month or so… that and more coming soon.
