Thanks for the Abiword pointer Dean. At 8MB installed, I think I’ll try to revive a really old computer back to life with this one. Files saved in Abiword as .doc files even opens up in Word XP without a hitch.
Now only if there was an Excel alternative . . .

Tamim: Spread 32 is a pretty decent Excel replacement. It used to be freeware and never had any nag screens. Now, it’s shareware and reminds you to buy it when you run it. Not that bothers me, if I were to actually need a spreadsheet more than once a year, I use this. Download it here and see for yourself. It doesn’t do pivot tables and complicated graphics but, it will run nicely on an old Pentium I or, even a 486. I’m sure, with some digging around, one could find a better freeware spreadsheet that is of the quality that Abiword is. I’ll look around some.
Small, fast and gets the job done. Now, if I could just find a decent Powerpoint replacement…
