  • Klez Anit-virus Nonsense

viri.jpg Once and for all, please stop e-mailing me to tell me that I have a virus on my computer. I do not. You do! You did not receive a virus from me, you received it from someone who has my name in their address book with the mail spoofed so as to appear from me.

You are a victim of Klez (yes, they are calling it the virus worst ever), which is very similar to the Nimda virus of recent months. It’s all explained very thoughtfully and thoroughly here and here. It is a nasty and persistent virus that can be cleaned with some attention. You can try the Symantec Klez utility, or you can try Trend Micro’s utility to rid yourself of this particular strain of virus. I’m not sure which is best but, as Mordred pointed out, you probably will not be able to rid yourself of it with an easy click. You will have to work at it and expect that it won’t be easy.

Additionally, I’d like to point my Outlook and Outlook Express patronizing readers to update the security of their operating systems as well as the Office 97/2K/XP suites that Outlook is packaged with. Point your browsers to the security update for Outlook Express/Internet Exploiter. When you have finished with that, please send your browser to the Windows Update website and begin the process of updating your entire system with the latest security updates and system updates.

I must add a word about anti-virus software. There is no reason for anyone to have to be susceptible to viruses in the wild. Particularly this type of virus. Outlook has been know for years to be vulnerable to virus’ and will remain to be vulnerable. Armed with that knowledge, please ensure that you protect yourself from the possibility of threat. For those of us that think that virus’ are quite possibly an inside job and that Microsoft is secretly funding development… knock it off and head over to some of the free solutions; F-Prot remains free for individual use, AVG Antivirus offers a very capable free virus scanner, Avast offers a free license for personal use, Antivir also offers another option that is free, Linux users as well as DOS users can also get BitDefender’s antivirus software for free as well.

Finally, none of these measures will ever be able to help you if you do not take the following precautions:

1). Make sure that you have applied every available security update to your Microsoft products. Which means your version of Windows, Outlook, Office, and Internet Explorer. All of this can be accomplished from the Windows Update website.

2). Make sure that you have updated your anti-virus software and the virus definitions that make the software effective. Most companies issue new virus definitions weekly and some do it daily. Your software is useless unless you do this.

3). When seeing an attachment of questionable origin and nature, don’t open it.

4). Reconsider your reliance upon software that continues to cost you time and money over and above the initial expense of the license. There are alternatives to Microsoft products that are perfectly functional and acceptable.

  • Novell to Bundle eDirectory on Linux

The Register is running a piece that says that Novell, during its Brainshare 2002 user conference this week, Novell detailed plans to provide improved support for emerging standards such as (Simple Object Access Protocol and Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) within its One Net Web services platform.

Funny, we thought they should have done this ages ago..

  • AOL “Gets It”

Why all of this skirmishing over instant messaging? Because, it is one of the vangaurds of the future of computing. Soon enough, you’ll be instant messaging all over society. Across any number of devices, networks, and platforms. This article does a nice job of summarizing the (latest) conflict.

  • Trillian and AOL square off

AOL shuts out Trillian users in battle over IM “… in the past 24 hours, an elaborate game of cat and mouse has developed between AOL and Trillian creator Cerulean Studios…” So, go and download the latest version of Trillian, 0.721 and that will fix your problem, at least for today until AOL figures out how to block them again.

This happened with Odigo and with Jabber. Trillian has been a paxtonland favorite for the last couple of months at least. We are also having problems with conversyx as well. AOL has also shut us out apparently. I wish them the best. AOL is a monster of corporate greed.

  • Talk to Me Live

You can now talk to me live if you wish to help me test and promote my newest project, Conversyx.

Working in partnership with Pandora Networks, Jeff Pfund, myself and several other people are starting to gain some real momentum as interest is building about this project/application. Conversyx is a web-based video/voice/instant messaging application. It does voice, video, chat, co-browsing, and remote control (like pc Anywhere) using a browser based VNC client. It’s perfect for technical support groups, customer relations centers, and much more… in fact, the applications are almost endless.

I’ll keep the link up on top of the left-hand menu. Pop on in and see me, just for fun.

  • Enron Gets Even Deeper

Hours after Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself Thursday from the Justice Department’s criminal investigation of Enron Corp., the entire U.S. attorney’s office in Houston, Texas, stepped down from the same probe, citing the same reason: appearance of a conflict of interest.

This thing is getting uglier by the minute. I feel that it’s no suprise that the administration and it’s appointees are knee deep in this. In fact, I’d expect it. However, this is evidence that one party is indeed no better than the other. Whitewater, Enron… really, what is the difference?

  • Nader Barks at Gates

Ralph Nader wants Microsoft to pay dividends to investors, saying the software giant’s $36 billion cash pile amounts to an illegal tax shelter for wealthy shareholders such as Chairman Bill Gates.

“It is significant that a small number of persons who run the company hold a substantial share of the stock in the company, a fact that is very unusual for such a large publicly traded corporation,” the letter said.

“This also raises questions about whether or not these persons, including yourself, are accumulating these staggering sums of cash to advance other agendas, rather than to advance the interest of shareholders,” it said.

  • Hrmmm.. A decent Excel Replacement

Thanks for the Abiword pointer Dean. At 8MB installed, I think I’ll try to revive a really old computer back to life with this one. Files saved in Abiword as .doc files even opens up in Word XP without a hitch.

Now only if there was an Excel alternative . . .

Tamim: Spread 32 is a pretty decent Excel replacement. It used to be freeware and never had any nag screens. Now, it’s shareware and reminds you to buy it when you run it. Not that bothers me, if I were to actually need a spreadsheet more than once a year, I use this. Download it here and see for yourself. It doesn’t do pivot tables and complicated graphics but, it will run nicely on an old Pentium I or, even a 486. I’m sure, with some digging around, one could find a better freeware spreadsheet that is of the quality that Abiword is. I’ll look around some.

Small, fast and gets the job done. Now, if I could just find a decent Powerpoint replacement…

  • New Abiword

Download the latest version of AbiWord (0.9.6). Soon, you’ll give up on M$ Word in favor of this… it’s getting there!

  • Christmas 1905

xmas-1910.jpg In 1906-1015, or so, my great-grandmother used to receive 3 gifts for Christmas:

    a shiny, new penny,
    a candy cane,
    and a bottle of Coca-Cola.

She often told me that when she was 10, she got an actual china doll. She said that it was the only doll she ever got as a young girl. It didn’t make it past Christmas day. She broke it over Sigurd’s (one of her 6 brothers) head. Unfortunately, she didn’t get another one, despite the fact that her brother probably deserved the rap on the skull. Often was the way with him. There is a story about him I have that is amazing and true, but I’ll share it some other time.

  • Early Christmas Present
