OK….right now I’m writing this with MyYahoo page as the back drop. I installed this “tell dean” link in my I.E. browser “links” (drag and drop). It works despite an “error” of “object expected”. I’ve tried everything and it now all looks the same to me. Like I said, it does work. When you put it in “links” it tells you it might not be safe, yet after you put it in links or favorites and then use it, no errors are displayed. Dean, perhaps you can figure out the last bug…. tell dean

  • Well, there’s one less source

Well, there’s one less source of news: CNET buys rival Ziff-Davis for $1.6 billion I guess the bright side is now, Gary’s Tolowercase program will now be on ZDNet as well as c|net. Of all of the internet media giants that I hate on earth, it’s ZD I hate most. This loathing goes back to the late 80’s for me. Back when ZD net was just a poopy little area on Compuserve and only a couple of mags. I’m sure eveyone will now enjoy those wonderfully objective and unbiased product reviews that are littered the ads of the “top picks”…

  • I found a offhanded link

I found a offhanded link on kottke.org: Williams Defender Information and Links. I can’t tell you how much of a defender/stargate fan I was. I mean I was a child of the arcade. Having not many friends (well none really) to hang with, the arcade gave me an escapist retreat. Oh, I had my books, but T.V. sucked. So, when the games began to emerge, so did I… (from my room). Defender was my absolute favorite. Stargate, the sequel was good, but not as good and original as defender. This page is a pretty good “info set” about the game…

  • One thing though. In order

One thing though. In order to use the latest W3C namespace for XSLT transformations http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform you need to have the latest version of MSXML (version 3.0) on your machine otherwise *most* of the current XSLT commands will not parse correctly in I.E. 5.0 or 5.5.This is an example of what I have on my site to construct a hyperlink and what works with the “old” namespace. This is the XML: <xlink:simple xmlns:xlink=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink” href=”mailto:joe@joeinternet.net”> <email>Joe</email> </xlink:simple> And this is the XSL: <a> <xsl:attribute name=”href”> <xsl:value-of select=”xlink:simple/@href” /> </xsl:attribute> <xsl:value-of select=”xlink:simple/email” /> </a> If a visitor had the latest MSXML then I…

  • developer.com has an excellent introduction

developer.com has an excellent introduction to transformations (XSLT) using IE5. Potentially controversial stuff, fears of M$ taking over yet another piece of the web development pie. Funny, I’ve never compared this before, but I don’t seem to remember Netscape going through all of this when they developed, introduced, and built an entire application development platform around Javascript… But, then again who cares. Won’t be long and Netscape will support all of the DHTML/XML shortcuts and no one will have anything to bitch about.

  • I followed the link, clicked

I followed the link, clicked on “demonstrated” and it gave me back an XSL command from one of my files. My concern was that after running the “test” I got an error when I tried to launch a new browser. It tried to launch Explorer.exe. Now that is scary. I think his “demonstration” is full of bugs. It didn’t leave a “test/txt” file in my temp directory. I had to restart to cure the error the demonstration gave me. What’s up with that??

Did you try the test yet. It worked on mine. I went to the temp directory and sure enough, there was a file called “test.txt” afterward. Scary.

  • Oh my. I like C#.

Oh my. I like C#. I can see how it is going to combine the “power” of C++ with the ease of Visual Basic and XML. XML is a piece of cake. The real power behind XML is XSLT. XSLT not only allows for the seperation of style from data but has the functionality/power of a programming language. Here is a great “tutorial” for XSLT that I found at Mulberry Tech. This is the “main” tutorial page that lists Zvon tutorials. They include: XML, DTD, Mozilla (XUL), WML, RDF, XSLT, Perl RE, CSS, and Schematron. Just click on the XSLT…

  • I spent the morning examining

I spent the morning examining the M$DN info that I could find about Visual Studio 7 and M$ .NET. I found a number of links and articles. I’ll only bookmark the ones that don’t crash Netscape 4.73. Here we go: the C# starting page will get you started with white papers and the like. The C# intro has more details. There is also a C# language reference available in Word format. Which I have not read yet. The next thing that really does sort of intrigue me is the ATL Server development platform using C++ as a rapid application deployment…

  • It looks as though M$

It looks as though M$ is at it again:IE 5.5 angers Web standards advocates “…As if to illustrate the predicament, the download page for version 5.5 came up blank for Netscape users yesterday and this morning. Microsoft has since fixed the problem…” (link via zeldman) I think that the DHTML functionality is wonderful. The big concern here is that it will incourage developers to create things that are not cross browser compatable. I guess that could suck, but AOL could get off of it’s ass with Netscape 6. Or the mozilla team could stop trying to create the Mt. Olympus…

I installed I.E. 5.5 yesterday as well… I’m also on a dialup account. Dan was laughing at me. We were both on ICQ as I was doing the install via the windows update site. I had about 40 minutes left when he started his install with a cable modem. He was done in under 3-4 minutes… reboot and all. What a show off. I’m still not using I.E. as my daily browser though. I’m still a Netscape person. From what I can see I.E. 5.5 is a bit faster, but I’m having trouble seeing the changes. Since I use pretty…
