  • Man Convicted of Rape, Freed After 18 Years

Despite the fact that he was convicted in previous crimes and acquitted of others, he is innocent.

The DNA evidence (rape kit? clothing?) that would eventually clear him, was thought lost. Or, so say prosecutors. The evidence “surfaced” when a pipe burst in the room which it was housed.

Interesting that more and more people are being let out of prison, innocent. What debt does society, the state in which they were accused and convicted, and the legal system that failed them.. what debt do we owe people such as this? With time taken from their lives, with personal relationships ruined, not to mention lives of children involved, what sacrifice do we owe these people? Any?

Better yet, how many innocent people are wrongfully serving sentences for crimes they did not commit, learning to become criminals? How many are sitting on death row?

  • Cowboys, I’m Telling You… Riding Around in the Desert

The U.S. possibly covered up evidence relating to the the attack on the Afghan wedding and village. Discussed earlier here, as well.

The investigation isn’t a result of Clintonites looking for satisfaction. The U.N. is heading this up. There were 48 people killed and 117 wounded.

U.S. forces had also committed human rights violations by tying up the hands of women at the scene, the paper said.

In a statement provided to the Times, a U.N. spokesman said that the report contained judgments that were not sufficiently substantiated and that a comprehensive report was being finalized and that would provide a more detailed and accurate pattern.

How long will we allow our military to operate in Afghanistan with a free pass to kill anything that moves? How long are we going to support this ambiguous campaign? How long are we going to trust the White House, Ashcroft, and the military to behave in a properly, gentlemanly, and orderly manner? Do we even know what/whom we are now chasing? Finally is it up to history to hold oversight in this matter or, has the Bush administration so deftly side-stepped responsibility in this matter in front of the world, that there is no oversight authority? (via metafilter).

  • Bush Parks in Flint

af1.jpgI just watched Air Force One fly over my house. Apparently, they parked it in Flint. Sounded loud and whiny… Well, that’s a lot of presidents I’ve been around or, at least near. Carter, Bush Sr., Clinton, and Jr.

Once, while stationed in Korea we were ordered to prepare for an inspection by then vice president, Bush Sr. We were in the middle of a pretty bad hot and dry spell and the grass was all brown and dead. Much like it is now. While painting rocks white with my squad, the First Sergeant ordered us to also acquire suitably green paint and paint the grass green as well. We found some of the green type of RADAR scattering paint used on vehicles and used that. Well, there we were rolling out the green paint onto the dead, brown grass. Of course, the entirety of the stupidity of what I was doing was so apparently obvious and painful… I could hardly stand it and still can’t. I wonder how much that paint cost per gallon.

Bush never showed up but, a cat did walk in the green paint and track it all over hells creation. There were little green kitty prints everywhere, right up to my last day at the place. I bet they are still there.

Anyway, that was the day I decided to get out of the Army at all costs. I’m sure you understand. It took me another 3 years to do it but, I managed somehow.

  • paxtonland Returns

Paxtonland is back, a day late but, back. Sorry for the delay as well as the outage.

You notice things may be slightly different around here I will post a change log as soon as I am completely finished making changes. We’re not undertaking a major surface redesign but, we did complete a major sub-surface redesign. Agaiun, I’ll give all of the details as soon as everything is back together. Meanwhile, give it a spin!

If you find any errors, please report them to me. That would help me a great deal.

  • Software Update

Dean’s Software Guide has been updated for the merry month of May. Thank you and please drive through.

  • Insomnia

Paxtonland patrons know that I am frequently afflicted by another compulsion, Insomnia. Actually, Insomnia is a movie that has been directed by Christopher Nolan, who also did Mememto, a wonderful mindbender. Further research unveiled that he is also working with Jim Carey on another Howard Hughes biop called “Larger than life” which should be interesting as well. Anyway, Insomnia is scheduled to open in late may and stars Al Pachino and Robin Williams, among others… looking forward to it coming out on video as I never leave my house anymore… *sigh*

  • On This Day… 4/5/67

bday_balloons.jpg Yeah, I have one of those cool birthdates… The last one was 6/7/89 and next one is 1/2/03. Today I am indeed 35. birthdays are never really a huge problem for me. For some, they mark the inexorable passage of time. Like mile markers… counting the miles all the way to the “exit” (okay that’s bad, I admit). For the last couple, I just get a little moody and pissy… then I cheer up when its over. Now, I look at my birthday as a chance to party and hang with my wife, kids and friends.

My wife thought it was very sad that I never had an actual birthday party. There must’ve been one while I was in San Diego with my mother and grandmother, cause there are pics. But, I was too young to remember it. I was 2 (1969!). Anywy, my first b-day party was given to me by her. She had Mordred come, a couple of other friends and her parents and grand parents. It was great, the best b-day I can remember. I was… what… 28?

Anyway, to everyone who dropped me an e-card, a small note, and wished me well today. Thanks very much. I must be doing okay, cause there were a lot.

  • paxtonland Forum v.2.0

The paxtonland Forum (version 2.0) is up and running. Back from the dead, we’ve put things back together, given it a slight face lift and added more functionality. If you were a member, please register your name in the new forum. If you are a new member, please do the same.

Hopefully and with any luck, we’ll have a nice place to talk about many things. It will take a while for them to build up some real momentum but, the last version went very well. Now that we have our own domain, server space, and databases to run everything, it should be great. So get in there!

  • AOL “Gets It”

Why all of this skirmishing over instant messaging? Because, it is one of the vangaurds of the future of computing. Soon enough, you’ll be instant messaging all over society. Across any number of devices, networks, and platforms. This article does a nice job of summarizing the (latest) conflict.

  • More Pictures Uploaded

Well, as I threatened… I put up about 14 megs of pictures. There’s summer 2001, misc. 1999, 2000, and 2001. I’m sure I have more but, that’s all I can muster the energy for right now.

  • Christmas 2001 Pictures

Well, after much delay, I finally published the Christmas 2001 pictures. Sorry for the delay. Seems as though everything else in my life took a higher priority. I’ll do more of the misc. pics soon and post them here when I do.

  • Blizzard 2002

I started the snow removal process at about 6:00 am. I cleaned off my car and shoveled a path to it. It snowed completely over what I had done in about 15 minutes. It was coming down early this morning at a rate of about 1/4 inch every 15 minutes. Anyway, I made it out of the driveway and around the block pretty easily. But, that Buick is a pretty good car. Well balanced, heavy, and front wheel drive. My old car, the Corsica, would have been a nightmare. It was so front-heavy… that if my toe even slightly touched the brakes, I’d go pinwheeling down the street.

Well, here’s what we’ve got so far. Click for a larger image (pics will open in a new window):

I’ll take more pics if the kids go outside… Oh, you can look at the pictures of the Blizzard of 2001 too as a comparison.

  • A Lot Of Page Views

The rant that I did on October 25, 2001 about the Flint UAW worker Anthrax hoax has been getting hundreds of page views. Not sure why, may have something to do with that picture I did. Oh well, hope they like it too… I love to spread the good work about Flint.

  • Pentium 4 Breaks 2 GHZ

Making the news will be the Pentium 4, 2.0 and 2.2ghz. release today. Big deal… not sure why that is news worthy. Pricewatch shows them in the $380-440 range. In my opinion, wait for the AMD Athlon XP to drop to the sub $200 range. They are already $340. I’m seeing that the AMD Athlon XP and MP series 1.7ghz chips are already giving the wheezing Williamette’s a run for the money. Intel should just go to sleep.

  • I’m not dead

    I’m here, I’m in hiding, I’m not dead…

Not a lot of activity on paxtonland due to the fact that I’ve been focusing on getting through the holidays. I’ve spent a lot of time with my family and that time I can never regret. Soon, I’ll post the pictures from the holidays here as always (4th year running)

I’m a bit late due to the fact that I’ve been trying to focus on the Clinecta project and writing some of my first software in almost 8 years. Needless to say, I’m getting an invaluable crash course in PHP which is magical, by the way.

Rest assured that all is well here, I’m still firmly at the helm of paxtonland, and expect to see more as soon as I am able. Which won’t be long.

  • paxtonland Progress

    machinery.jpg

I’ve done a bit of optimization to allow the comments posting and searching to work a bit faster. Part of the reason that things are taking so long is due to the sheer size this place is getting to be. There are almost 1400 entries here for gods sake! I never realized there was that much drivel here.

A bit of javascript has also been added in order that you will be remembered when you post comments. That way, you don’t have to go to the trouble to re-enter that text each time. Also, spell checking has been added to the comments links thanks to spellchecker.net. It was pretty painless and works very well, for free even.

Spell checking has also been added to the authors posting menus. Let me know if you experience any problems with these changes.

  • 2 Years of Nonsense

Yesterday, paxtonland passed the 2nd. year of its current incarnation. This site has existed in some form or, another… since the early days of the internet. Archives from that time are not available for 2 reasons, the great hard drive crash of 1999 and I have too much pride to show you those awful moments in internet history.

  • History as Correspondance

The Historic Texas Postcards of the George Fuermann collection. Sponsored by the University of Houston, the gallery depicts life in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and several other Texas cities between 1898 and 1924 as depicted in postcards and are now in the public domain.

  • Software Update — December

I have posted the December software choice for your downloading pleasure. Wheee!
